Lahore, October 17: Nestlé Pakistan organized a blogger meet at Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore under its initiative ‘Start Healthy, Stay Healthy’.
The event was organized to raise awareness of the importance of nutrition in the first1,000 days of a child’s life. Dr. Huma Fahim who is Medical Advisor in Nestlé Nutrition gave the audience an informative presentation, which was followed by an interactive quiz.
During her presentation Dr Huma talked about the importance of Nutrition, for first 1000 days of a child’s life from conception till 2 years. Evidence accumulates around the fact that environment experienced during the critical time windows of pre and post natal development have modulating effects on health later in life. In particular, the first 1,000 days of life are considered to be a crucial period of life during which the nutrition one takes in plays an important role in determining the health of a person later in life. The first two years represent the most critical period of growth and development. For example, most of the brain development is completed by the age of two years and the height that a child has at 2 years is almost half the height that child will have as an adult.
In addition to this Dr Huma also highlighted the fact that Pakistan is a country that is seriously suffering from malnutrition. Almost 50% of the children population in Pakistan is currently a victim of malnutrition which is due to proper food, lack of fresh and hygenic water and lack of essential minerals that are vital for a child’s development such as iron and zinc. Currently according to a survey conducted Pakistan ranks 3rd in the world when it comes to malnutrition which is alarming.
Shah Mujeeb ud Din Country Compliance Manager at Nestle, said “Nestlé has an expertise in nutrition and believes it has a responsibility to share that expertise. While talking about Nutrition, he said that it is important to make people aware about what food to eat and what not. He also added that many parents especially mothers do not know about the fact that breast milk is a complete diet for a child’s growth and therefore for the first two years a child shouldnt be exposed to packaged or powdered milk. In addition to this he said that due to lackof awareness on healthy food and nutrition obesity is on the rise. Currently Pakistan ranks 9th in the world in most obese nations. Therefore what you give to your child during first 2 years has a great impact on his/her health and growth later.
The event was attended by prominent bloggers and key opinion leaders who all pledged to use their influence to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition in the First 1000 Days of a child’s life.
